What is Kuwait National Day 2021?

Kuwait celebrates its National Day on the 25th of February every year. This event holds national importance as it marks Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah's ascension to the throne in 1950 and his death in 1965.

Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah is a renowned leader of Kuwait who made prominent contributions to help the state of Kuwait achieve independence.  This is why the Kuwaitis believe February 25th a significant day for their nation.

History of Kuwait National Day 2021

In the early 16th century, Kuwait used to be just a small fishing village. But due to Kuwait’s strategic location, it quickly became a key trading place and centre for boat building in the Middle East. In 1756, the Al-Sabah family began a dynasty that rules Kuwait till today.

However, the small nation faced a dilemma in 1899:

·        Either be ruled by the Ottoman Empire or,

·        Choose to become a British Protectorate.

The ruler of that time – Sheik Mubarak or Sheikh Mubarak “the Great” chose the latter option. After a few years, Kuwait got independence from British rule under the leadership of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah ON 19th June 1961. However, the climate in June is very hot. Therefore, in 1963, the rulers decided to shift the National Day to 25th February.
